In Memoriam: Cast On Photographer Kyle Baugh

Kyle

We knew this would be a time of sadness for us all as this is the last issue of Cast On in printed format but we had no idea it would be overshadowed by a tragic loss to the Cast On family. Our photographer, Kyle Baugh, died suddenly in early August just before the magazine went to the printer. Kyle was only 38 years old and leaves behind his wife Kristy and two daughters, Madison, 15 years old, and Avery, 5 years old. All of them were part of our Cast On family.

Flip through back issues and you will find photographs of Kristy who often filled in beautifully as a model. When we needed a male model, Kyle would frequently step in. We were thrilled when they told us they were expecting a baby over five years ago, throwing them an impromptu shower at a photo shoot. Our first thoughts selfishly were, “Now we don’t need to worry about where to get a baby model!” My favorite Cast On cover photo is the May-July 2009 issue featuring Madison posing at a sheep farm. In this issue you’ll see a photo of her all grown up. Kristy is our model for all of the other designs in this issue.

You wouldn’t think that you could form strong friendships with people you only see for one day four times a year but the friendship we feel for Kyle and his family proves that it is true. He lightened the mood of every room he entered and, believe me, that is something you need at a photo shoot. Former TKGA Executive Director Penny Sitler remembers Kyle as “the light in the room. The joy he brought to his exceptional work as a photographer made it a pleasure to be a part of Cast On shoots. We have lost a true friend.”

Kyle had offered to stay on as our photographer after the TKGA transition, doing the shoots in his studio and imposing upon his family. We were looking forward to the continuation of this relationship and building even stronger ties with the Baughs. Our loss is nothing compared to that of Kristy, Madison and Avery. Our thoughts are with them.

At the photo shoot for the summer issue, I shot some very poor video of Kyle with a child model. I think you can see why we will miss him so much.

    Dear TKGA Member,

This is the last print issue of Cast On.

You should have received an email after our conference in July announcing the changes to The Knitting Guild Association (TKGA). The financial realities of our transition to a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization have made it impossible to continue with the magazine’s print version. Although this situation has made me sad, I am excited about the future of TKGA and
    Cast On.
