Machine Knitting - Starting Out on the PASSAP Duomatic
DM5, DM80 or E-6000

By Katharine Seaman.

Your PASSAP knitting machine is assembled and ready for action. But what do you do now? How do you make it work? This course will provide basic information necessary to become comfortable with your machine and understand what it can do. E-6000 knitters will work without the console, to become fully acquainted with their machine. Differences between the various Duomatics and E-6000 will be noted and anyone with the E-8000 should have no difficulty making the transition from instructions for the E-6000.

There will be questions to answer and swatches to construct and submit. You will learn:

· The names and functions of the parts of the machine
· How to thread the machine
· The meaning of the settings on the carriages
· How stitches are formed
· Yarn weights suitable for the PASSAP
· How to cast on and bind off on both the front and back beds
· The effect of the tension masts and the stitch sizes on a swatch
· Meanings of definitions and abbreviations found in patterns
· How to increase and decrease
· Shaping without increases (short rowing)
· How to make a simple eyelet and buttonholes
· How to create basic stitches, stockinette, tuck and slip stitch
· How to create knitted patterns with hand manipulated stitches
· How to knit Fair Isle or Jacquard
· How to create necklines
· How to join seams

You will knit swatches and complete three projects: a lap robe/baby blanket from patterned blocks to give you experience in knitting fancy stitches and noting how stitch changes affect gauge, a Treasure Trove bag to give you experience with patterned tubular knitting, and a sweater. The course can be helpful for those interested in the PASSAP TKGA Machine Knitting Masters Program but is not a pre-requisite to that Program.
